MEDEL OF HONER ALLIED ASSAULT
-----------
GAME DESCRIPTION
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (MoHAA) is a first-person shooter (FPS) computer game developed by 2015, Inc. and created by Steven Spielberg. It is the 3rd installment of the Medal of Honor series. The game, based on the Quake III Arena engine with modifications from Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.², simulates infantry combat in the European and North African Theaters during World War II. Allied Assault is the first game in the Medal of Honor series to be released for Windows, and the only one to be ported to Linux.
In the game the player takes on the role of Lt. Mike Powell of the United States Army Rangers who works for the OSS. Single player missions include assaulting German bases in Algiers and Norway, storming Omaha Beach on D-Day, and rescuing comrades behind enemy lines in occupied France. The original game’s Omaha Beach mission is often compared to Steven Spielberg’s 1998 film Saving Private Ryan. This level was re-created in Medal of Honor: Frontline for consoles. Other elements in the game are also comparable to the film, like the “Sniper Town” level and the “Guarding of the Bridge” level where the final
battle sequence of the movie is very similar in action and visuals to the game.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, the first PC game of the popular Medal of Honor series, was one of the first World War II based shooters to really capture the feel of the war. With impressive graphics, incredible sound, and an emphasis on historical events rather than fictional stories, the game quickly captured the attention of gamers. Allied Assault basically started the World War II FPS subgenre that we have all come to love and hate. While the early games in the series were popular on the PlayStation, the franchise didn’t really take off until Allied Assault arrived on the scene and surprised everyone with realistic weaponry, expansive levels, and a variety of unique experiences, like operating anti-aircraft guns and strapping sticky bombs to tanks. It was a fun experience for sure, but it wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination. While the game offered plenty of original challenges, at the end of the day, you were still a lone super-soldier charged with saving the world, just like you were in every other FPS game since Wolfenstein. Though the setting was different and the gameplay was a varied, at the end of the day, Allied Assault was every other FPS with a very fresh coat of paint.
The developers attempted to fix this “super-soldieritis” in the expansion pack to Allied Assault, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault – Spearhead. Many of the missions in the game place you on battlefields with a team of comrades, challenging you to defend captured points and secure strategic locations with a team of AI controlled soldiers. At the time, these developments were revolutionary, but ultimately, they failed in execution.
You’re sent in to gain control of a German controlled town in one particular mission. You and your band of brothers begin raiding the German-infested town by clearing out some houses, a church, and a hotel. The idea of this kind of invasion is awesome. You and several other soldiers, opening up doors, clearing out rooms - this was really unique and new. However, it simply doesn’t work in Spearhead. In this particular mission, you cannot let your Captain die, but if you let your Captain fight, he will die. The solution to this problem, then, is to simply run as fast as you can, killing every Nazi before your Captain can get near them. Another mission parameter in an earlier level of Spearhead requires that most of your comrades survive. Again, I had to run ahead and kill everyone before my AI teammates could get in firing range of the enemy because if they did, they would die and I would lose the mission.
There are a few missions where you can actually fight alongside fellow soldiers, but your allies are ineffectual and don’t ever seem to kill any enemies. I had a hard time telling if this was an AI issue or a design choice. It seems that your teammates only exist for aesthetic purposes and to ruin the mission for you. I found myself wondering if they just simply don’t kill because their AI is terrible or if the developers wanted to leave the killing to you. Judging by some pathfinding issues that also plague your fellow infantrymen, I’m going to assume their incompetence is an AI issue and not a design choice.
By the last of the three missions, the developers gave up on the idea of teamwork and chose to send you on a suicide mission in Berlin. Your mission is to invade Berlin, get past all of the city’s defenses, and find a safe that contains a list of double agents. This mission requires you to destroy – single-handedly – several tanks take out a half-dozen machine gun nests, and snipe a dozen snipers hiding in the ruins of the city. The only way I beat this level was through constant quick-saving, which basically ruined the whole mission. This mission in particular would have benefited from a well-designed system of allies, but that system of allies is simply not in this game.
Spearhead isn’t always disappointing. One particular battle involves finding a medic for the Captain while your forest base is being shelled from far-off (in preparation for a German troop surge). You don’t actually kill any Germans during this sequence. Instead, you run from bunker to bunker, avoiding shells and timing your movements just right to avoid being destroyed by German artillery. Like the rest of the Spearhead, the mission isn’t perfect (when you’re hiding in bunkers and trenches you’re invincible even as shells crash around you), but it’s very tense and challenging without being overly unfair like the Berlin mission.
All together, this is a game that really wants to succeed, but it’s simply before its time. It could have been great, but some poor design choices, like the way your allies cannot fall in battle, really ruin the experience. As it stands, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Spearhead has some fun moments, but at the end of the day, this short and very flawed expansion that is just not worth your time.

MEDEL OF HONER A.S SPEARHEAD
GAME DESCRIPTION
Medal of Honor Allied Assault Spearhead for the PC represents a unique addition to the Medal of Honor franchise. Players will assume the role of Sgt. Jack Barnes as he endures the final months of World War II, from Operation Overlord to the Battle of the Bulge and culminating with the fall of Berlin. The Medal of Honor Allied Assault Spearhead combines nine expansive single-player levels with over 12 new multiplayer maps and includes new
enemy lines in occupied France. The original game’s Omaha Beach mission is often compared to Steven Spielberg’s 1998 film Saving Private Ryan. MEDEL OF HONER A.S BREAKTHROUGH
================
GAME DESCRIPTION
There really isn't much to Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough that those who've played the original and its first expansion haven't already seen before.
Given the current popularity of war-themed first-person shooters, it's no wonder that one of the best WWII shooters, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, would get a second expansion pack. Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough takes you to previously unexplored parts of the European theater. Unexplored doesn't necessarily mean fresh, though, and while Breakthrough has a little more meat to it than the first expansion, Spearhead, it ends up being repetitious and stale.
Once again you'll be on your own fighting Axis soliers.
The original Allied Assault consisted of several missions, which in turn had many levels. Breakthrough doesn't change this formula, and consists of about a dozen new levels. These comprise three missions, which will take you to North Africa, Sicily, and finally mainland Italy. The individual levels are varied and will take you about six hours to complete in total. You will destroy German artillery, rescue prisoners, and drive assorted vehicles, among other things. The individual levels don't fit together to form a cohesive whole--you're dumped onto a battlefield and given objectives, without any explanation as to your ultimate purpose.
The drive into Italy was important because it split German resources in Western Europe, especially when Mussolini toppled from power. You'd never know it from the game, though; all you ever get are cutscenes with war footage and famous quotations. Similarly, it would be nice to know how you are making a difference in the war as you complete objectives. Not that anyone will be there to notice your achievements--you will spend most of the game fighting alone. Whenever there are Allied soldiers nearby, they get killed more often than not. You can try to save their lives--we really tried--but these soldiers are just doomed to die. At any rate, only in the first part of the first mission and the last part of the last mission do you ever get a feeling that there's a war being waged around you.
These few intense battle sequences are actually quite fun. The sandstorm in Africa drastically limits your visibility, so you need to push ahead and try to find where gunshots are coming from. The next level has you protecting a minesweeper as it attempts to clear a minefield. The castle at the end of the game at Monte Cassino has Germans and Allies fighting all over the place, and you can hear gunfire and screams coming from all directions. You have to fend off wave after wave of German attacks in several key positions on the map.
The problem is that these moments are too few and far between. The majority of Breakthrough is rather forgettable because it is too similar to the previous Allied Assault missions. A lot of times you'll be riding on a vehicle shooting at enemies that pop up like targets at a firing range, or you'll have to lay explosives on artillery. You again have a mission in which you must use papers to fool the Germans and Italians so you can sneak around their base. Sometimes these recycled elements are made to be challenging, but they end up becoming save-reload moments. For example, you'll be stuck in a building and have to repel a tank assault. You have mortars to fend them off, but the problem is that there is a huge delay between when you fire and where you see the mortar land. It will take a few tries until you get the positioning correct for the first wave. But then more waves come, forcing you to figure out positioning again before the tanks breach the wall. There's a similar situation when you have to cover escaping prisoners from snipers. Having to save and reload until you figure out the exact pattern and locations of an enemy isn't what makes a shooter fun to play.
Breakthrough has other gameplay elements that are becoming outdated. One example is enemies spawning out of nowhere. You may see a health pack lying off the path where an MG42 is resting in a bunker. If you get the health pack, dozens of Germans will come at you in front of the MG42. But if you don't get that health pack and instead run off where the Germans would spawn, no one will be there to greet you. The AI is also substandard. Enemies will sometimes find cover, but they will just rush at you in open areas more often than not. You can just hide around a corner and wait for more of the enemies to run at you so you can mow them down. The game relies on accuracy to differentiate between the difficulty levels, but there's still a big gap between difficulty levels--which was a problem in the original Allied Assault and the Spearhead expansion. The normal difficulty is too easy because you can rush right into enemy locations and find many health packs. But the hard difficulty is nearly impossible without saving and reloading often. These gameplay elements just don't hold up in today's games, because the shooter genre has evolved so much over the past two years.
At least Breakthrough remains consistent with its inability to change. The graphics have not been noticeably improved, which is to say that the engine has seen better days. The weaponry is basically the same as well. The few new weapons in the game are just slight variations on weapons that were already in the original--there's no reason to get the game based on an Italian rifle that is functionally equivalent to the German ones you've already used. The game does look reasonably good, but not nearly as impressive as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault did when it was first released. On the other hand, the sound in the game continues to be very impressive. Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough sounds fantastic with its gunfire, bullets whizzing by you, and vehicle noises.
Clipping issues like this should not be found in today's games.
Breakthrough includes nine new multiplayer maps and a new multiplayer mode called liberation. Liberation is a team-based game where dead players are put in a jail with no weapons. Soldiers on your team can come and rescue you from jail. Once you step out of the jail zone, you are given back your weapons. Rounds can theoretically last forever if people are continually rescued, so teams must also defend their own jail to keep enemies from rescuing their dead. Like all team-based modes, liberation requires teams to know what they are doing. Oftentimes only one person will remain who will refuse to rescue his teammates and will instead go on a hunt to kill enemies. But overall it's a fun gameplay mode to complement the other multiplayer modes found in Allied Assault.
There really isn't much to Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough that you haven't already seen before, and it's definitely not a product that will make people go out and buy Medal of Honor Allied Assault if they haven't already. It's even hard to recommend to those who already have Allied Assault because of its $30 price tag, so unless you're dying for more of the same type of action that Allied Assault first offered in January of last year, you would probably be better off spending your time and money on something else.

MEDEL OF HONER Pacific ASSAULT
======================
GAME DESCRIPTION
Ahh, it's that time of year again. A time for joy, celebration and Pacific Coastal rampage. Yes, it's that time for another installment of the successful series of Medal of Honor. The previous game in the series, Medal of Honor:Allied Assault took place during WWII, starting with the horrific battle sequence of D-Day. You're task in the previous game was to infiltrate the German forces and help bring an end to their efforts. Medal of Honor:Pacific Assault is also during WWII, however it concentrates on the opposite side of the globe, namely Japan on the outerlying islands. There has been many years of separation between the first Medal of Honor and this one, so there was plenty of time for improvements, graphical and otherwise.
You start off in the game as Tommy Coughlin, a Marine that you have the fortunate chance to play on your computer in your safe place of living. Tommy and his three friends from boot camp are making their way towards Tarawa Atoll. What ensues is a horrific gunfight that you will no doubt end up killing you. When I died this early in the game, I was thinking for a moment that this may be indeed the hardest game ever made. Who dies in the first few minutes of game play? After a few moments of confusion however, it appeared that I was supposed to die, as a flashback ensued which took me back to boot camp. Here you got introduced to your squad members' names and personalities. You have a somewhat long talk with them, and this is important as it allows you to somewhat get into the characters that you will be fighting with and for later in the game. After the talk you proceed with training, which was too long in my opinion. There should always be an option to skip training and this is a game where that would have been nice. There are really no new concepts or game play developments that needed explanation.
After training you are a proud Marine! And lucky you, as your assignment just happens to be on a warm island near sunny Hawaii. What better way to spend your time in WWII than lying in the sun and getting a nice tan? Well unfortunately for you, that island happens to be Pearl Harbor. What ensues in this stage of the game is the kind of "chaotic game opener" that MOH:AA treated us to with the D-Day scenario. What this means in plain english is explosions, death and more explosions. Once past this, our brave Tommy Coughlin will embark on an epic quest through several of the major battles in the Pacific Theater.

MEDEL OF HONER AIRBORNE
===================
GAME DESCRIPTION
In Medal of Honor Airborne, players take the role of PFC Boyd Travers of the famed 82nd Airborne Division through Europe; from the invasion of Sicily and Italy to the final battles in Germany. Each of the six missions in the single player campaign of MOHA are somewhat unique to the World War II game setting as they begin with an airborne drop into hostile territory. The mission are multi-objective based and independent of one another, thus giving you the option to complete them in any order. Many times the objectives completed first depends on where you direct yourself during the parachute drop.
Technically the missions are not linear but that doesn't mean the overall storyline isn't. The laundry list of mission objectives can be accomplished in any order but ultimately this order has no impact on out come of the story except that they must be completed to advance to the next mission. This is most notable in the first few missions where you're going through the motions fighting waves of Nazis to push along the story. This would have been great for a game developed a few years ago but there's more of a demand for game stories to take on a different flow depending on the success or failure of play.
""
As mentioned previously the single player campaign includes six missions, each mission can be easily played in under two hours for a total of about 10-12 hrs of total game play. There is however an excellent multiplayer game mode that makes up for the short single player mode. Medal of Honor Airborne includes three multiplayer modes of note is the Team Deathmatch Airborne; The Allies will enter the match from an airdrop, while the Axis team begins on the ground.
Game Play
Unlike many World War II shooters that involve airborne troops, Medal of Honor Airborne lets you control the action from the moment you jump from the plane. Controlling the parachuting gives you the ability to pick where you land and where on the map you start the mission. The game does provide green smoke signals to help guide you to landing zones but you are by no means obligated to land there. At first look this is a fun new concept but after the first few drops you realize that typically the safest and easiest places to land are the ones with the smoke signals. This does take away some freedom but it's still a nice feature and a great way to get a bird's eye view of the map prior to being thrust into combat.
Medal of Honor Airborne has all of the standard weapons one would expect in a World War II shooter, M1 Garand, M1902 Springfield, and Thompson sub machine gun are just a few of the Allied weapons while the Axis soldiers have their MP40, Panzerschreck and others to fight with. All weapons look and sound as authentic as you're going to get in a video game, but fire power and aiming seems to be a little inconsistent from one enemy to the next.
Graphics/AI
Visually the environments in Medal of Honor Airborne are appealing. Most buildings, streets, and other objects are nicely textured while the lighting adds some realistic atmosphere effects. The environments are not destructable and although this does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the game it would have added some more realism and features seen in many newer games. Random falling rubble to take out a few enemies would have come in handy on more than one occasion.
Frustration is one word that comes to mind when describing Medal of Honor Airborne's AI; both for enemy and allied units in the single player campaign. Enemy units have seemingly dead on accuracy across hundreds of yards of the game environments while your weapons become wildly inaccurate at any distance over 10-15 feet. This inaccuracy really leaves you scratching your head when you've just unloaded multiple rounds into an enemy only to see him emerge unscathed. Friendly units can be just as frustrating to deal with by randomly blocking both your path and line of sight.
The bottom line is that Medal of Honor Airborne hits more than misses. The game shines with it's multiplayer modes and options, at release however there have been dedicated server issues that EA is working to correct. The single player campaign comes up a little short in both length and expectations with some fundamental AI flaws. That being said, the single player portion is enjoyable and intense fire fights that will have you ducking in your seat, while the parachuting element adds an exciting feature to the genre.
